Where Are We?

In northeastern Nigeria
(near the Cameroon border)
working with Ekklesiyar Yan'uwa a Nigeria (EYN), the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria.

Nigeria has a population consisting
of about 50.5% Muslims and 48% Christians (Pew Forum on Religion
and Public Life, 2009).

Relationships between Muslims and Christians is often very tense, with conflict occasionally erupting over power and politics.

What Are We Doing?

We are teaching at Kulp Bible College—the main ministry training school for Ekklesiar Yan’uwa a
Nigeria (EYN)—and leading courses such as conflict resolution and theology

We are working to develop and expand the EYN Peace Programme.  This will include conducting workshops for church leadership, creating and implementing programs related to peace and reconciliation and conflict resolution.

Why are Peace and Reconciliation Important?

The church in Nigeria currently stands in a position to go two directions – towards active reconciliation or towards revenge and violence.

Cycles of victimization (on either side) must be broken in order to prevent animosity and hate from growing and escalating.   There is a peace movement within EYN but it needs momentum in order to gain ground (which is why Kulp Bible College seeks to build its peace curriculum and why the Peace Programme needs development and expanding).

We believe that Jesus shows us how to live and that we are called to show the world what it means to truly live.  Our world lives in cycles of violence, hatred, othering, and revenge.  We believe that those who know the Prince of Peace are called to demonstrate to the world what it means to love our enemies and to work for peace.
